Comprehensive DMAIC
Black Belt Training

Duration 15–18 days (3–4 sessions, separated by a 3–6 week interval each)
Participants DMAIC Project Leaders (Black Belts)
Overview

The Comprehensive DMAIC Black Belt Training workshop brings both the "management" and "analysis" dimensions of DMAIC and Lean methods into a single, multi-week learning and application program. The course guides participants through a complete process improvement project, teaching them how to define and scope a problem and goal (Project Y) and then to apply measurement and experimentation tools to pinpoint and validate causes (critical Xs).

Note: Participants in the Comprehensive DMAIC course should have some familiarity with basic statistical analysis methods and be very comfortable with mathematical calculations and spreadsheet software. Each participant is required to have a laptop computer pre-installed with a designated statistical analysis software package for use during in-class exercises.

Objectives

Combines the objectives of Phase One and Phase Two workshops. These include:

  • Provide project leaders with a thorough understanding of the logic and principles behind Six Sigma and the DMAIC model

  • Enable participants to identify, select and use appropriate methods and tools – including statistical analysis methods – to successfully complete their assigned projects

  • Build skills in such critical areas as effective problem definition, determining customer requirements, developing and executing measurement plans, challenging existing assumptions, pinpointing root causes, and implementing innovative solutions

  • Prepare participants to apply a broad array of measurement and analytical tools – data collection and sampling, measurement systems analysis, use of descriptive and inferential statistics, and more – to critical business processes and problems

  • Prepare Black Belts to lead the team and communicate effectively with project Champions and others in the organization

  • Ensure project solutions are aligned with business priorities, provide meaningful value, and tie to perspectives of external customers

  • Develop effective control and measurement plans to maintain improvement results and monitor ongoing process performance
